Why Pregnant Women Have Such Vivid Dreams and Nightmares
Pregnancy can bring vivid dreams and unsettling nightmares thanks to shifting hormones, changing sleep patterns and heightened emotions. Here’s what they mean and how to cope.

When Heather Desjardins was pregnant, she often had disturbing nightmares. "They revolved around me going places and forgetting I had a baby and leaving her behind. I have no doubt that it was my own fear about being a good parent, but I can’t tell you how many times I had that dream while I was pregnant," she says. "Sometimes [in] I would leave the house and forget that she was at home in her crib. Sometimes I would go out somewhere with her and leave her sitting in the baby carrier by the cash register. It was definitely a common theme in my dreams and was quite stressful."
As distressing as these dreams can be, according to Laura Devlin, C.Psych, a clinical psychologist in Toronto, they're totally common and normal. "During pregnancy, so much is shifting at once," she says. "Physically, hormone changes, especially higher levels of progesterone and estrogen, alter sleep cycles and increase time spent in REM sleep, the stage where most dreaming happens. Plus, added discomfort from nausea, restless legs or needing to use the bathroom more frequently can also cause sleep disturbances and contribute to sleep disorders."
But it's not just physical. Pregnancy also stirs up powerful emotions: excitement, anticipation, anxiety, and sometimes fear . Devlin points out that these feelings cause the brain to become more activated at night, which can make frequent vivid dreams feel more memorable and even more intense.

Vivid dreams and nightmares explained
Dreams, whether intense or unsettling, help the brain handle stress and strong emotions, says Devlin. During pregnancy, the significant changes people experience can bring those emotions to the surface while sleeping.
"Pregnancy often stirs up worries about the health of the baby, labour and delivery, or how life will change once the baby arrives," Devlin shares. "Those themes can surface in dreams, sometimes in exaggerated or symbolic ways."
However, there's an important difference between each type of dream. Dr. Gail Saltz, MD, an associate Professor of Psychiatry at the NY Presbyterian Hospital Weill-Cornell School of Medicine and psychoanalyst with the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, explains that vivid dreams are often described as high intensity, realistic, and often include sensory experiences like sound, physical sensation, and heightened visual experience.
Nightmares are a bit different. Saltz says, "Pregnancy nightmares involve disturbing or frightening scenarios, usually happening during REM sleep, but not always. These dreams might include something scary or anxiety-inducing, and often leave the dreamer feeling awakened, frightened, or anxious."
Both vivid dreams and nightmares do share a key similarity: they occur during REM sleep. Saltz notes that REM (rapid eye movement sleep) is defined by distinctive eye movements and high brain activity.
"REM sleep is defined by having the most brain activity, activity at the level of wakefulness," she clarifies. "It involves emotional center activity via the amygdala, the thalamus, and it involves memory, such that the heightened emotional activity to remembered and stored." This heightened brain activity produces intense, realistic dreams that are easier to remember.d
Why do dreams change during pregnancy?
Dreams often become more vivid and emotional during pregnancy, mainly due to shifting hormones and sleep, explains Andrew Colsky, LPC, LMHC, behavioural sleep medicine clinician and licensed mental health counsellor.
He notes that hormones play a key role in this change. “Hormones like progesterone, estrogen, and cortisol don’t increase dream time, but they make sleep more fragmented and boost the chances of remembering dreams,” Colsky says.
Sleep disruption adds another layer. “Normally, we cycle through all of our sleep stages—Stages I, II, III, and REM—every 90 to 120 minutes during our usual hours of sleep," he explains. "Our dreams are most vivid during REM, and then fade as we enter deeper stages. Pregnancy can lead to more fragmented sleep, which makes it more likely to wake during or immediately after a REM cycle. This increases our chances of remembering dreams, and since REM is when we process emotions, the resulting dreams can feel especially intense or even bizarre.”

Common themes in pregnancy dreams and nightmares
Pregnancy brings on a range of dreams and nightmares that often reflect psychological and emotional changes during this stage. The most common include:
New beginnings and uplifting dreams
According to Dr. Ryan Sultan, MD, a double board-certified adult and child psychiatrist, dreams can be positive during pregnancy.
"The pregnant woman might imagine the baby’s appearance, bonding with the baby, and/or integrating the baby into the family system," Sultan explains. "These dreams often symbolize anticipation and hope for the future, symbolizing new beginnings."
Anxiety and fear
Sultan also notes that anxiety and fear-based dreams are common, with many reflecting fears surrounding pregnancy and new motherhood.
"The unconscious mind often processes deeply rooted anxieties about pregnancy through dreams, he says. "Your dreams may contain themes about losing the baby, childbirth, and parental inadequacy."
Physical discomfort
Physical discomfort can also be woven into dreams, says Colsky. He explains, “Some ways that physical discomfort is incorporated into dreams include real back pain, kicks, or pressure being woven directly into the dream, symbolized by scenarios such as being stuck in quicksand or chased but unable to run.”
Relationship and security
It is also very common for dreams to have relationship and security themes. According to Colsky, “These include themes relating to partners being absent or unfaithful, or the opposite—partners being supportive in surprising ways, including bonding dreams with the unborn child. This is because the unconscious is testing security in relationships during this new stage,” he explains.
Are vivid dreams and nightmares normal during pregnancy?
Vivid dreams and nightmares are common during pregnancy, according to Devlin. While these dreams can often feel intense and disturbing, she says it's important to remember that nightmares do not predict outcomes experienced in real life.
"Nightmares reflect our fears, not our fate," Devlin explains. "A scary dream about something happening to the baby usually signals the deep concern and protective instinct that’s building, as well as the sleep changes they are experiencing, rather than any prediction of danger. In fact, some research suggests mothers who experience more nightmares during pregnancy may have shorter labours and less postpartum depression.”
When to be concerned about pregnancy dreams
Most pregnancy dreams are harmless and simply part of the experience. However, if nightmares become frequent or intense enough to interfere with rest or cause significant anxiety, it may be worth seeking professional support. In some cases, ongoing disturbing dreams can be linked to underlying mental health concerns, including post-traumatic stress disorder.
Support is also recommended if recurring nightmares begin to disrupt sleep. "Some nightmares can be so vivid that they can produce anxiety and stress, making it difficult to fall asleep again after waking, which leads to fragmented night sleep," explains Devlin. "When this happens often, it leads to fragmented rest and poor overall sleep quality — though even a single rough night can have noticeable effects."
Coping strategies for vivid dreams and nightmares
To cope with vivid dreams and intense nightmares during pregnancy, consider adding the following strategies to your arsenal.
Limit stressful content
Rachel Mitchell, a certified maternity and pediatric sleep specialist, emphasizes the importance of reducing exposure to harmful content before bedtime.
"Being exposed to stressful content can raise cortisol and adrenaline levels, which may lead to increased nightmares and decreased sleep quality," she explains.
Journal
"Writing down dreams can assist in processing any fears, worries, and/or anxieties that can occur before and during sleep, which ultimately could lessen the impact of nightmares," says Mitchell. "Journaling can also help identify specific triggers, such as events, foods, or conversations, that may cause nightmares. Many people also find journaling to be therapeutic and calming, which is helpful when preparing the mind and body for rest.”
Try stress-reducing techniques
"Stress-reducing techniques, such as mindfulness, prayer, and deep breathing, can help calm the nervous system and regulate important hormones needed for sleep, such a melatonin," says Mitchell. "These techniques can also help balance sleep cycles and lead to fewer disruptions during sleep."
Practice good sleep hygiene
Mitchell explains that sleep hygiene is especially important during pregnancy, as it supports healthier outcomes during pregnancy.
"Following a consistent and calming bedtime routine each night, going to sleep within your natural sleep window, preparing a healthy sleep environment, and reducing stressful interactions and content are all ways to improve sleep and reduce disruptive dreams," she recommends.
Seek support
Mitchell also suggests seeking support from a therapist, as it can aid in emotional processing while providing encouragement, especially for individuals coping with traumatic events during pregnancy.
“Many individuals find comfort in knowing they aren’t alone and can receive guidance on things that have worked for others,” she notes.
When to talk to your healthcare provider
While vivid dreams and nightmares are often normal during pregnancy, Mitchell says that they can become problematic.
“If disturbing dreams or nightmares happen consistently for two weeks or more and cause significant sleep disruption, it’s important to let your provider know,” she explains. “In some cases, your clinician may want to rule out underlying issues or order tests to ensure nothing more serious is going on.”
The bottom line
Good sleep is one of the foundations of mental and physical health, yet pregnancy is a time when rest can be especially challenging. According to Devlin, coping strategies such as calming bedtime routines, journaling about worries, or talking openly with a partner or therapist can help parents feel more grounded and reduce the impact of unsettling dreams.
"This can help parents do more of their emotional processing during the day, and may reduce the need for the psyche to address the emotions during sleep," she explains. "When expectant parents see these changes as part of the journey rather than something to fight against, it supports both their rest and their emotional resilience."
Although nightmares are common in pregnancy, if symptoms such as intrusive dreams, severe anxiety, or disruption of daily life occur and resemble those of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), it may be a sign of a more serious issue. In these cases, seeking support is important.
