Will Elsa be getting a girlfriend in Frozen 2?

An interview with the film's writer and co-director doesn't confirm or deny the possibility, but leaves fans with hope that their idea may become reality

If you're a parent of young children, you're definitely familiar with Frozen. Your kids have probably watched the hit Disney movie a million times, and almost for sure went through a phase where they sang "Let It Go" on loop for days on end. (If that's happening in your house right now, we're sorry. Just keep on keeping on. It'll end eventually.)

The sequel, currently called Frozen 2, is set to come out at the end of 2019, and there have been speculations that the new movie might have Queen Elsa getting a love interest. What's more: That love interest may be female. Yep, there's a possibility that Elsa could be Disney's first queer princess (well, queen, technically, but the point still stands).

The idea has been making the rounds on Twitter via the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend since 2016, just after Disney announced it was working on a sequel. But the idea has surfaced again, because when writer and co-director of both Frozen films, Jennifer Lee, was asked about this in a recent interview with Huffington Post for her upcoming film, A Wrinkle in Time, she wouldn't rule it out.

“I love everything people are saying [and] people are thinking about with our film—that it’s creating dialogue, that Elsa is this wonderful character that speaks to so many people,” said Lee. “It means the world to us that we’re part of these conversations.”

She continued saying that the team behind the sequel has had "a ton of conversations about it and we're really conscientious about these things." While she isn't saying that it's happening, Lee also didn't immediately dismiss it.

"For me ... Elsa’s every day telling me where she needs to go, and she’ll continue to tell us," Lee added. "I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go."

Judging from the first movie, this idea wouldn't be too out there. Frozen has been praised by the LGBT community for being coded with queer undertones and themes, and the movie's show-stopping ballad—you know, the one your kids can't stop singing—has been interpreted as a coming-out anthem.

Considering Lee's comments, we think there's definitely a possibility that Elsa could have a same-sex love interest, and if that's the case, we're totally here for it. It's about time LGBT kids had a queer Disney character to relate to.

And to all the haters currently stewing in your heteronormative anger at this, we have three words of advice for you: Let it go.
