Planes and helicopters and George, oh my!

Surprise!

Prince William and Duchess Kate brought Prince George along today with them today (July 8) to see the Royal International Air Tattoo. And George is pretty excited. He clearly just wants to get over to the planes—no offence to the nice people he’s supposed to greet.

At first he was a bit scared and asked Kate to pick him up.

I think all the planes, people and noise were a bit overwhelming for him—please look at his face! He is only two. But he quickly adjusted and was off to explore.

After putting on some noise-cancelling headphones, he and William checked out the planes.

Then he grabbed Kate’s hand and was off to see more planes.

He even got to sit in a Squirrel helicopter, which William actually trained in back in 2009. George was a bit apprehensive and didn’t want to sit up front with Dad, instead he sat in the back with Kate.

And then he got to sit in a Red Arrow Hawk. Flight Lieutenant Jim Hobkirk told People magazine that George kept saying “tail rotor” during the day so he clearly knows lots about helicopters. He was heard asking “Mummy, can I fly the Red Arrow now?” And William told him “Not right now.”

George is a huge fan of planes—and motorcycles and trains and scooters and tractors.

He of course wore his signature shorts, but this time with a polo instead of his usual button-up sweater. And Kate was re-wearing a Stella McCartney dress with her Smythe blazer (Canadian pride!). And a leopard print headband—you just know these are going to come back in style thanks to the Kate effect.

It was only announced this morning that George would be joining his mum and dad for the event. Kensington Palace tweeted before the event that “The Duke and Duchess know that George will enjoy seeing the aircraft up close.”I’m sure William and Kate were waiting to see what kind of mood George was in today because you just never know with toddlers.

This is George’s third official royal engagement—he went to a playdate in New Zealand and met his namesake bilby in Australia. But this is his first official royal duty at home in the U.K.

And he gave the day a thumbs up!

We haven’t seen George since he attended Trooping the Colour with William, Kate and Princess Charlotte last month. But we will get more adorable pics of him soon because this little royal turns three on July 22. See you then!
