Is this really the best baby shower gift ever?

Let’s be real: Baby showers are all about gifts. No one has ever been sad to receive a gift before, not even a mom-to-be whose life is about to turn upside down. But horror strikes when you have a crying newborn and a pile of thank-you cards to write for all your new baby swag.

Laura Turner, a San Francisco-based writer, recently wrote about how a woman (or an angel disguised as a woman) at her baby shower asked, “Can we give you the gift of no thank-you notes?” Turner was so happy with the proposition that she vowed to pass on that gift at every baby shower she attends, relieving other moms-to-be of writing thank-you cards after their baby showers.

Just think about all those things that can be done in the time you would otherwise spend writing thank-you notes—finally getting in a wink of sleep while your baby naps or actually getting a few moments to yourself for a shower.

Turner said she paid extra attention to saying a special thank you when she opened each gift, but other women might find other ways to say thanks, such as emails or texts, or saying something about the gift when they next time saw the giver. To those who are tightly tied to the tradition of receiving a thank-you card, Turner says, "a gift should not come with any obligations."
