RECALL: Major meat recall has been expanded

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has expanded the XL Foods ground beef recall to additional cuts of meat (including whole muscle cuts) that may be contaminated with E. coli. They are advising Canadians to ask retailers about the safety of their meat prior to purchasing. And they are warning that raw meat products from such stores as Walmart, Metro, Food Basics, Marché Richelieu, Delectable, Prairie Meats, Costco Wholesale Canada and more are affected.

It is being advised that consumers use extreme caution when purchasing beef at this time, until further notice by the CFIA. The CFIA is also reminding Canadians to cook their meat safely: Use a meat thermometer, and make sure the internal temperature of your beef reaches 71°C or 160°F, 63°C or 145°F for whole cuts, and 74°C or 165°F for leftovers. And know that freezing does not kill E. coli.
