He may not be a household name, but you've definitely seen his YouTube videos. The mastermind behind the popular videos Convos With My 2-Year-Old, Matthew Clarke was inspired by dialect with his daughter, then two-year-old, Coco.

“This is crazy! If she were an adult she’d be escorted out of the building, but because she’s under three feet and adorable, nobody bats an eyelash," Matthew said about their jarring conversations.

Joining forces with David Milchard, Matthew shot a couple episodes in one day with their friend’s production company. Initially just for fun, their side project has became front and centre for them and the duo have just wrapped up season three of the series. Matthew chatted with us and came up with a list of his top five favourite parent YouTubers. In no particular order, here they are:

Action Movie Kid

This dad is awesome. By day he’s a VFX guy at DreamWorks, and in his spare time he takes these home movie-style clips of his son and turns them into incredible action sequences. It’s hilarious, awesomely creative, and very cool. It’s just so fun to watch him use his talent to have fun with his son. And you know his son is going to love these vids as he gets older. Isn’t it every boy’s dream to be an action hero?

BrittleStar

With over 360,000 followers on Vine, Canadian Brittlestar has become ‘Vine Famous', and has recently started playing on YouTube. His two sons also do a lot of Vines and they’re always collaborating together. The whole family is hilarious. It's very smart humour, which is a rare commodity on the internet. Definitely check them out on all their channels.

DMK

This guy started a Depeche Mode cover band with his son and daughter and they’re awesome. Their cover of “Just Can’t Get Enough” is one of the best YouTube videos ever. They’re actually a really good band and the concept and execution of it is so sincere and unexpected. To me, it’s a perfect YouTube idea.

How to be a Dad

Charlie and Andy are internet geniuses in general and have an amazing site for parent’s called howtobeadad.com. They have a perfect blend of earnest love for their kids and the art of parenting, along with a hilarious, quirky perspective on all the insanity that is fatherhood. They’re a great place for a laugh as well as some interesting insights into parenting. And I love that. It’s like the old Mary Poppins, “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.” I think these days especially, if you can make people laugh or provide a little irony, you can actually deliver a sincere message. But without that humour, it can just seem cheesy.

Kid Snippets

A series kind of similar to ours, these guys take stories, made up by kids, and they stage and film them, using adults in the roles, but using the actual kid’s audio dubbed over as the dialogue. It’s super clever and funny and well done, and really highlights the awesome imaginations that kids have. Lots of fun on this channel.
