Poor Ryan Reynolds! The Canadian actor was attacked on social media for poorly positioning daughter James in the baby carrier.
[UPDATE July 3:] Ryan Reynolds has commented on the social media frenzy that occurred last month when wife Blake Lively posted the notorious Instagram pic of him carrying baby James incorrectly in the carrier. And we love what he says!
"The baby's not properly secured in the vessel that I'm wearing here," he tells Matt Lauer. "And you know, I'm a first-time dad and that is not the first mistake I've made. And I can guarantee you it won't be the last."
We couldn't have said it better ourselves. Hey, guess what? I've made a ton of parenting mistakes—you know why? Because my kids are seven and nine years old—that's a lot of years to have to be perfect.
[Original post June 24:] At first glance: sweetest, hottest, celebrity-parent Instagram pic ever! We ♥ you, Ryan Reynolds! Thank you, Blake Lively! *Sahhh-woooon!*
But, once you get passed the swooning, uh-oh. Poor Ryan! That is not the correct way to hold a baby in a carrier. So..., slammed on his very first Father's Day.
Yes, Ryan is now the poster-celeb for bad parenting because wife Blake posted this pic of him carrying their six-month-old daughter, James, the wrong way in her Líllébaby Complete All Seasons baby carrier.
As you can see in the photo, James' head is buried in the carrier, positioned too low, and her feet stick straight down at the bottom.
The Instagram pic drew 336K likes (and counting) and almost 7,400 comments—many of which are critical, telling Ryan he's harming his baby and advising him to read the baby-carrier manual. Indeed, many of the comments are nasty, judge-y and hard to read.
There are other comments, however, that support Ryan and Blake, thanking them for the photo, noting that they may be briefly covering James' face to protect her privacy, and pointing out that lots of dads are seen carrying their infants like this but, because they're not celebrities, aren't viciously mobbed for it on social media.
Other commenters make a good point that, no matter what, it's great that people are so invested in baby safety.
Ryan can take comfort in numbers, though, since this isn't the first time a celeb has been the target of social media attacks for parenting mistakes: Kim Kardashian is constantly called a bad parent and criticized for photos she shares of North; Jill Duggar apparently doesn't know how to carry her baby boy in a sling; and remember when Prince William did not secure newborn Prince George properly in his seat (that was major!)? Brad Pitt has said he gives his kids Coca Cola to get them going in the morning, but there's not a lot wrong he can do in the public's eyes! Oh gosh, but remember Britney Spears driving with her baby on her lap?!
So, what's the right way to carry your baby in a baby carrier? We recently asked an expert just this question. Check it out (more Today's Parent parenting videos here!)...
There you have it. I kind of feel sorry for Ryan, especially since this is his first Father's Day, and he and Blake were generous enough to share this rare family pic with their avid fans. Then again, maybe those trolls have saved James from hip dysplasia—at the very least, some awareness around carrier safety is happening, and that's a good thing.
