Jessica Alba and Christopher Gavigan have brought The Honest Company and its clean, quality products to Canada! Our Haley Overland chatted with them about their big news, cleaner living and more.
So, guess who I got to meet yesterday! I've interviewed Jessica Alba before (check it out here), but that was just a phoner. This was the real deal, folks! And she did not disappoint.
Not only is Jessica, yes, as gorgeous in person as she is on the cover of magazines and in movies, but the mom of two was also very warm and personable. We had a real conversation about issues she's passionate about: bringing natural products of all kinds — household, beauty, baby products and more — to families in convenient and affordable ways.
Enter Jessica's Honest Company: Jessica and the company's cofounder, the awesome Christopher Gavigan (who also happens to be Grey's Anatomy actress Jessica Capshaw's husband) are now making their products available to our fair country. Yes, you and your friends can now enjoy Honest Company products!
"Everyone wants everything to be so antibacterial," Jessica says, "but, at the end of the day, there are just so many crazy toxic chemicals with such adverse effects; it's not good. If you can eliminate some of that, why not?"
I got to sample a bunch of Honest Company products myself, and I was really impressed with the quality and range of stuff they have — natural, and often organic, lip balms, body lotions, toothpaste, laundry detergent, bug spray, sunscreen, ADORABLE diapers, and more.
Jessica, Christopher and I also talked at length about the charitable initiatives that are built into the fabric of the company, particularly their partnership with Baby2Baby. I was so impressed by their overall passion and desire to give back both to moms and charities.
If you read Jessica's or Christopher's books — The Honest Life and Healthy Child, Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer World — you'll get a real sense of their initiative. They're not telling parents they better live 100 percent clean and green, or else! They're telling parents to lean into this lifestyle by learning about unsafe chemicals, noticing the abundance of them in regular household products, and taking steps toward integrating safer products into their homes.
"We're really focused on human health and the planet," Jessica says. "It's not about being hippy, crunchy — though all of that is totally fine! We don't live off the grid, everything hemp and homemade. We're talking about living day-to-day and making healthier choices."
"You can't do everything," Christopher says, "but do something. Make small, incremental changes, and prioritize them. Not leading with fear, but leading with education and empowerment." Love that.
Christopher uses this example of moderation: "If your kids play a lot in the front yard, don't bring out the pesticides; or do it when you're away on vacation if you have to, and understand the risks."
"All it is," Jessica says, "is reading labels and knowing the ingredients."
Jessica and Christopher's Honest Company products help educate by listing all the chemicals their products are free of. What can I say, I'm a fan!
When I asked Jessica for some beauty tips (I had to!), she recommended one anti-aging serum, and she swears by it: ReSurface by Shani Darden. It's not chemical free because it does have Retinol A in it — "So you must wear sunscreen," Jessica says, "and don't use it if you're pregnant." But this speaks to Jessica's overall philosophy: She's not 100 percent organic and natural, but she does as much as she can! The rest of her beauty tips are all in her book.
