Looking for an easy recipe for chocolate cupcakes that tastes great and works perfectly as a base for your awesome cupcake decorating ideas? Here it is!


  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2/3 cup boiling water

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 tsp vanilla


  • Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). In a large bowl, whisk cocoa with boiling water until no lumps remain. In a medium bowl, whisk flour with sugar, baking powder and salt.

  • Whisk oil into slightly cooled cocoa mixture, then whisk in eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour mixture until combined. The batter will be very thick.

  • Spoon batter into 12 paper-lined muffin cups. Bake 16-20 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into a cupcake comes out clean. Cool on a rack.
