2 lbs baking apples, peeled and sliced about 1/4-in. thick (about 6 cups)
2 tbsp granulated sugar
1 tsp lemon zest
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup ground almonds
1/3 cup large-flake oatmeal
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 cup sliced almonds
Preheat oven to 375F.
Combine apples, granulated sugar, lemon zest, juice and nutmeg, and toss to blend. Scrape into a 9-inch glass pie plate or similar baking dish.
Combine butter, brown sugar, flour, ground almonds, oatmeal and salt in a bowl, and use your fingers or a pastry blender to work into a crumbly, clumpy mixture. Add sliced almonds and mix until just incorporated.
Sprinkle crumble mixture over apples and bake 40 min or until apples are cooked, juices are bubbling and topping is crisp. Serve with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream or Greek yogurt.
