Bio-Oil Specialist Skincare Oil

The appearance of stretch marks can be tough to predict. Lots of women get them because of rapid physical growth—during pregnancy, for example—and research suggests genetics likely plays a part. Two things we know for sure: they're very common, and a lot of people aren't thrilled to see them, which is why there are so many products designed to help reduce their appearance, or prevent them from surfacing altogether. If you're less than thrilled with your stretch marks—or are hoping to avoid them during pregnancy—Bio-Oil Specialist Skincare Oil is a great option to try.

To help find the best stretch mark oils and creams out there, we asked moms and moms-to-be to put Bio-Oil to the test, and we liked what they had to say about this light, moisturizing product. This oil has long been a favourite stretch mark minimizer among moms and moms-to-be, so it's perhaps no surprise that most of our testers told us that their stretch marks appeared less noticeable after they had used the oil for an extended period of time. (One tester didn't see a difference—but that just goes to show that there's no miracle stretch mark product that's going to produce dramatic results right away for everyone.) Interestingly, one of our testers told us that she applied the product throughout her pregnancy on her stomach, but not on her sides or back, and she noticed a significant difference in the appearance of stretch marks on the areas where she'd applied Bio-Oil.

All our mom testers used Bio-Oil once a day, either after a shower or before bed, and they agreed that it was easy to apply. Editors in our lab found the oil has a light texture and spreads easily, although it does take a little while to absorb into the skin. All of our mom testers agreed that the key to using Bio-Oil is to give it time to absorb before getting dressed as it does leave some residue, but they also reported that their skin felt instantly moisturized. Meanwhile, our mom testers appreciated an added bonus of applying Bio Oil during pregnancy: it quickly relieved dry skin and itching. (Keep in mind that the product does have a baby-powder scent, which can take getting used to.)

Price is another concern for new parents, and while Bio-Oil has a mid-range price point (given the cost per 100 mL of product), we found that a little goes a long way. Just be careful not to over-pour, as the spout is narrow and you won't be able to put any excess product back. And keep in mind that the odd drip can make the bottle greasy, as can residue on your hands from dispensing and applying the oil.

FINAL WORD

Both editors in our lab and most mom testers were impressed with Bio-Oil Specialist Skincare Oil. The majority of testers gave this stretch mark fix very good ratings for quality, ease of use and value, and all but one mom said she would recommend it to other moms or moms-to-be. Plus, most testers said Bio-Oil is better or much better than other stretch mark oils or creams they've used in the past. As with any stretch mark-reducing product, consistent use is going to be key to seeing results. But the fact that it applies well and it pulls double duty as a soothing moisturizer makes it easy to fit in a morning or evening routine.
