Review

With its smooth balance of sweetness and tang mixed with firm bits of real fruit, Astro Smooth ’n Fruity was a hit with our parent and kid testers alike. It's made without artificial colours, flavours and sweeteners, and everyone who tested it agreed that this is one tasty yogurt. Not only did the parents feel good about giving it to their kids (and eating it themselves), but they also unanimously agreed it made for a healthy addition to any meal, or as a daytime or bedtime snack. Astro Smooth ’n Fruity comes in variety packs of 12 and features kid-friendly flavours like strawberry, peach and blueberry. All of the kids who tested this yogurt told us they like the taste and texture of this yogurt.

"I love the texture of the yogurt and that there isn't too much sugar—this is something I constantly check for when making food purchases!" —Nancy, mom of two

To analyze the nutrition of each yogurt we tested, registered dietician Cara Rosenbloom conducted a blind nutritional analysis (meaning we sent her the nutritional information and ingredients lists only—no brand names or labels). Serving sizes vary from product to product, so to level the playing field, we had her look at 100-gram servings of each yogurt, focusing on the quality of the ingredients and the sugar, protein, calcium and vitamin D content. It's worth noting that a 100-gram serving of regular yogurt (non-Greek) contains about six grams of natural sugars—anything on top of that is considered added sugar.

Astro Smooth ’n Fruity comes in 100-gram servings, and each strawberry flavoured cup, for example, contains 3 grams of protein and 13 grams of sugar (that's 3¼ teaspoons of sugars in total, 1¾ teaspoons of which would be added sugar). While Astro Smooth ’n Fruity is not a source of vitamin D, it is a good source of calcium, providing 10 percent of the recommended daily value for adults. Most of our parent testers were happy with the nutrition of the yogurt and all agree that the serving size is just right.

During our tests, we found Astro Smooth ’n Fruity cups fairly easy to open, and we especially liked that there are tabs on each corner of the lid—especially useful if the lid happens to tear (though that didn't happen in our testing). While some kids were able to get their containers open by themselves, a few had some difficulties getting the lid off independently. On the plus side, the yogurt comes stirred, so as soon as it’s open, it’s ready to eat. The texture itself is smooth, and while it does have some fruit chunks, the texture of them is more crisp than you get with a lot of other yogurts (no slimy strawberry chunks here). The majority of our parent testers found this yogurt easy to pack in a lunch and to eat on the go—ideal for school or family road trips. And when they're done, kids can toss an Astro Smooth ’n Fruity yogurt cup in the recycling (surprisingly, not something that can be said for all yogurt cups).

Price is an important factor when you're grocery shopping, and it's a key element when we're deciding which products get the Today's Parent Approved seal. One serving of Astro Smooth ’n Fruity works out to $0.42, which is on the low end of the price range of the yogurts we tested. All of our parent testers feel the yogurt offers good to very good value.

Final word

Astro Smooth ’n Fruity left all our parent testers satisfied, with everyone agreeing that this yogurt is a quality product that's easy to use. The majority of our parent testers also noted that it's somewhat to much better than other yogurts they've had before. All would recommend it to other parents, and they unanimously told us that Astro Smooth ’n Fruity should be awarded the Today’s Parent Approved seal. We agree. With a budget-friendly cost per serving and kid-friendly taste and texture in such a packable and snackable size, it's a solid option to pop in a lunch bag.

"I like that they are ready to eat—the kids can grab them from the fridge and enjoy.” —Sarah, mom of one
