Review

Simple and sturdy in construction, the Philips Avent Nighttime Pacifier stands out from the pack with its glow-in-the-dark handle. The clear silicone nipple has a slightly flattened drop shape that's designed to be both orthodontic and collapsible, and it's symmetrical, so it's no biggie if the pacifier gets popped into your babe’s mouth upside down. All of our hands-on parent testers rated the quality of this pacifier as very good.

Available in a variety of gender-neutral colours and patterns, the pacifier is sold in two sizes (0-6 months and 6-18 months) and comes in packages of two. It’s worth noting that Philips Avent recommends their pacifiers be replaced every month for safety and hygiene reasons—a more definitive recommendation than many other pacifier makers, who often suggest replacement every one to two months.

Our hands-on parent testers felt that the Nighttime pacifier is well-constructed, holds its shape well, stands up to chewing and is light enough for their baby to use comfortably.

“I like the glow-in-the-dark feature for nighttime—it made it easier for me to find the pacifier in the dark.” —Katherine, mom of one

To test how easily the nipple stains, we soaked it overnight in a sink full of soapy water with a bit of jarred spaghetti sauce. The next morning, we hand-washed the pacifier. The result? It retained a slight smell and some staining. But after a trip through the dishwasher, the smell was gone, the staining had been significantly reduced and there wasn’t any moisture in the nipple. We also boiled the pacifier for five minutes. Afterwards, the nipple had lots of water in it, thought that isn't unusual and it was easily squeezed out. Overall, the nipple did retain a slight orange tint, but we had to compare it side-by-side with a brand-new pacifier to actually notice the staining.

Most of our testers rated the overall ease of use of this pacifier as very good, with the remaining testers rating it as good. The snap-on nipple cap makes it especially easy to pop the pacifier in a diaper bag or purse when you're on the go, without any worries about it getting dirty.

“I like that these pacifiers have their own individual shields and not just the big case to carry them with. We carry enough things around with us—it's nice to have something smaller to pack.” —Jessica, mom of two
Final word

Overall, our hands-on parent testers gave the Philips Avent Nighttime Pacifier top marks for quality, and most said it was very easy to use. Our editors and parent testers both appreciated that this pacifier comes with a nipple cover and that it's easy to find at night when your baby flings it across the crib.
