Review

The original Skinfix cream was developed by a mom in Nova Scotia in 2012 and soon garnered a reputation for being something of a miracle worker for healing dry and chapped skin. Now sold across Canada and the US, Skinfix offers a number of effective products, including Skinfix Gentle Lotion, which we’ve found to be very good at fixing dryness and sore bits on babies and toddlers. This 98 percent natural lotion is approved by the National Eczema Association. We tested Skinfix Gentle Lotion in our lab and with a group of parent testers, and found it to be highly effective and an excellent value—which is why we’ve awarded it our Today’s Parent Approved seal.

Before giving our approval, we look at a bunch of factors. While the effectiveness of the product is, of course, the most important thing, we also want to know it is easy to use and provides good value for parents. Our lab noted that there were no ingredients that made them uncomfortable, and the fact that it was mostly natural resonated with our parent testers. There are no artificial scents in Skinfix Gentle Lotion, but it does have a slightly medicinal (editors thought plasticky) odour that some parents disliked. However, the smell wasn’t enough to put anyone off using this product, for the simple reason that it works brilliantly, better than other products our parent testers had used in the past.

The baby has had ongoing chapping on his cheeks from drool and cold weather, and this lotion has actually helped clear it up! I applied it every time I took him up for a diaper change (approximately five times per day).” —Megan, mom of one

Skinfix Gentle Lotion is a bit runny, but our editors found it absorbs quickly. In our lab the lockable pump was very simple to use, even one-handed, and it was definitely something our parent testers appreciated—especially because, as one parent commented, you can keep it out of a grabby baby’s reach. In fact, Skinfix Gentle Lotion received an almost perfect ease-of-use score from our testers.

Our lab evaluated this product by dispensing a dime-sized amount and seeing how well it absorbed into skin over time. It disappeared quickly with no residue, leaving skin softer and smoother after five minutes, with a long-lasting effect. All of our parent testers agreed their child’s skin felt immediately more hydrated after using this product, and that with regular use, it was softer. For the parents in our group whose children had skin issues, this lotion really worked, and they said they’d happily recommend it to other parents dealing with skin conditions.

The packaging of this lotion is perfect, from the dispensing pump to how easily the lotion flows through. The smell is light, and I do not need to reapply it to my child’s skin, as it absorbs quickly and stays moisturized.” —Wendy, mom of one
FINAL WORD

All our parent testers gave this lotion very good or good ratings for ease of use and value, and most said the quality was also good. The fact that Skinfix Gentle Lotion made a real difference to chapped and sore skin without being gloopy or leaving a greasy residue was a big plus—because as any parent dealing with this on the regular knows, not all lotions are up to the job. Skinfix Gentle Lotion scored highly in our lab tests for ease of use and quality, and we feel it is a great value product parents can rely on to relieve their children’s skin, whether for dryness or more serious skin issues. Every one of our parent testers would recommend this product to other parents and felt it deserved the Today’s Parent Approved seal.

I would recommend it mostly because it was effective for clearing up two patches of chapped skin.” —Teresa, mom of one
