"I will not wear a hat"

How to get your toddler to wear a hat in winter

"I will not wear a hat"

Q: My three-year-old son refuses to wear a hat — even on the coldest day. How do I convince him to keep it on?

A:
It could be that the hat your son is wearing is uncomfortable. Check to see if it’s too tight or itchy. If that’s the case, he needs a different hat.

Some people feel the cold more than others. He may not get cold as soon as you would. You can decide to let him determine when he needs a hat. Tell him that he can go out without wearing the hat, but insist that he have it in his pocket so if he gets cold, he can simply put it on.

On the other hand, if you really want him to wear the hat, you need to tell him he must and when he takes it off, simply take him home. He has a choice — go out with a hat or stay inside.
