Attention parents of kids with allergies: There is a serious Allerject recall due to a manufacturing defect that may prevent the injector from working properly.
Health Canada has announced the recall of two lots of kids' Allerject—a single-use, pre-filled epinephrine injector for kids weighing 15-30 kilograms.
The following lots are affected: 2857508 and 2857505 (0.15 mg / 0.15 mL auto-injector), DIN 02382059. These lots were distributed as of June 1, 2015.
The recall was issued voluntarily by Sanofi-aventis Canada, Inc., after they discovered a serious manufacturing defect in the needle, which may prevent the epinephrine required in emergency allergy reactions (anaphylaxis) from being injected properly. This obviously poses a severe health risk, as anaphylaxis may be deadly.

What parents and caregivers of kids using Allerject should do: Health Canada is advising consumers to check the lot numbers of their Allerject (0.15 mg / 0.15 mL auto-injector). If you have one of the recalled products, return it to your pharmacy for a replacement with the same dosage. Talk to your pharmacist about how to use the new injector, in case it's different from the one you returned.
