Canadian food recall: Apple slices at Subway and Shoppers (UPDATED)

[UPDATE May 1:] The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has taken the Starbucks product off the recall list. 

[Original post Apr. 30:] The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced the recall of sliced apples and products containing them by Sun Rich Fresh Foods Ltd., a company based in Brampton, Ont. The apple slices may be contaminated with listeria.

This recall involves Sun Rich Apple Slices sold in 57g and three-pound packages, best-before date May 17. The distribution area is not known; CFIA lists it as a "possibly national."

NOTE: The following products are also being recalled: Sun Rich Fruit Medley, Apple Slices with Grapes and their Waldorf Salad Kit, as well as Starbucks Seasonal Fruit Salad, Shoppers Drug Mart Apples and Grapes and Subway Apples.

The CFIA says this recall has been issued due to the results of their testing and after an illness related to the slices was reported.

Symptoms of listeria contamination include vomiting, nausea, fever, aches, headache and neck stiffness. Contamination is a major risk for pregnant women, the elderly and those with a compromised immune system.
