Just a quick news item today from the department of "Who's Pregnant and Who Isn't" headlines.
Turns out that star beach volleyball player and mom of two Kerri Walsh Jennings was five weeks pregnant with her third child when she won a gold medal in London this August. (Check out the story on Mommyish.com.) At the Today's Parent office we think this is awesome: A strong, kick-butt woman proving that she can achieve insanely impressive goals, while growing another human! Scientifically, that's very cool. (Gold medal for multitasking!)
And the fact that she sees it as really no big deal is also pretty cool. Walsh Jennings was dealing with the stress of a major competition, overseas travel, and the scrutiny of millions of people and those cameras scrutinizing her in a two-piece bikini. (Talk about a bump watch!)
While I find our current cultural fascination with pregnant celebrities a little strange, I love it when women with children are recognized and celebrated for being more than just moms — because every mom, really, is more than "just a mom."
