Nintendo Switch 2 News: Everything To Know Before Buying

The Nintendo Switch 2 aims to significantly enhance the gaming experience compared to its predecessor, the 2017 Nintendo Switch.

According to a recent BBC article, one of the key upgrades lies in graphics and audio quality. These enhancements stem from improved CPU and GPU performance, enabling better visuals, faster loading times, and more immersive three-dimensional sound as highlighted in Nintendo's latest press release.

The Switch 2 will also offer a chat button that utilizes the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera, enabling players to communicate during gameplay. Other features, as noted on the Nintendo website, include a 7.9-inch built-in LCD screen that displays in full HD at 1080p, support for up to 4K resolution, HDR, VRR, and frame rates up to 120 fps.

The hardware enhancements extend to the Joy-Con 2 controllers with magnetic connectors, a redesigned stand offering adjustable viewing angles, and an internal storage capacity of 256 GB. Complementing these features is a new Switch 2 dock designed for improved cooling and performance stability, states the company's press release.

The Nintendo Switch 2 release date is scheduled for June 5, 2025. However, recent tariff announcements in the United States have impacted pre-orders and delayed them in Canada as well.

According to a recent article by IGN, pre-orders for the Switch 2 in Canada will not start on April 9, 2025, as originally planned, to align with the U.S. pre-order timing, which is yet to be determined. Instead, IGN reports that pre-orders will begin on May 8, 2025.

Despite these delays, Nintendo has confirmed that the June 5 launch date remains unchanged.

If you're wondering whether current Switch games will work on the Nintendo Switch 2, the answer is yes—with some considerations to keep in mind.

According to the official Nintendo website, the Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games from the original Switch, along with its own lineup of new titles.

Enhanced versions of popular games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Party Jamboree will also be available, offering improved performance and features tailored for the new console, as reported by GameSpot.

However, not all Switch games are compatible with the Switch 2. For instance, the Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit cannot be played due to hardware incompatibilities, as noted on Nintendo's website. Additionally, some games may experience startup issues, though specific titles vary.

You can easily transfer games and data from the original Nintendo Switch to the new Switch 2, using the system transfer feature.

According to Nintendo, the system transfer feature allows you to move your digital games, save data, and settings seamlessly to the new console. Additionally, many original Switch games are compatible with the Switch 2, and you can continue using your existing controllers wirelessly.

To get started, make sure your Nintendo Account is linked to your current system. This account is essential for transferring your purchased digital titles and saved progress to the new console.

The Switch 2 console will feature parental controls and safety features, according to Nintendo. Just like the original Switch, screen time management tools are one of these key features.

To use time limits wisely, Matthew Johnson, director of education at MediaSmarts, emphasizes the importance of setting clear rules around screen time.

"The best approach is to create rules and routines so your child understands when they can use screens and for how long," he advises. "It's also essential to make time for other important activities."

The Switch 2 console will also allow parents to restrict in-game communication features. However, Johnson points out that while the app does not monitor the content of online interactions, it lets parents review who their child chatted with and for how long. Parents must also approve GameChat friend requests and video chat sessions through the app.

"If you have set up parental controls, your child will not be able to add anyone as a GameChat friend without your approval," he explains. "You will also receive an approval request every time they start a video chat. Additionally, the app allows parents to customize camera settings, such as blurring backgrounds or adjusting the field of view."

Additional safety tips

While parental controls and safety features can be a huge help, Johnson also recommends these additional Switch 2 safety tips to make gaming experiences fun and safe.

Set appropriate rules

The Switch 2 does offer parents parental controls and safety features through the supporting Switch app. However, Johnson says that parents have to take the initiative to set appropriate rules and boundaries before playing.

"A new device is a great opportunity to set or review your household rules around their behaviour, what content is appropriate, and when (and how long) they're allowed to engage in different screen activities," suggests Johnson.

Manage in-game purchases

The My Nintendo Store is where games, additional content, and accessories can be purchased. If parents aren't careful, kids can make purchases at the store. Having said that, Johnson says that it's also a good habit to set spending restrictions.

"To manage spending, including in-game purchases, you'll need to visit your account and create a family group," he suggests. "You can then use the parental controls menu for each member of the family group and turn on spending restrictions, which means your kids have to get your approval before buying anything (including in-game purchases)."

Be selective

"Parents should be aware that the Switch 2 has two layers of approval for contacts: whether someone is a Switch friend, which allows them to see each other's online status and play multiplayer games together, and whether they are also a GameChat friend, which enables them to use GameChat and, if approved, video chat," explains Johnson. "It’s wise to be more selective when approving someone as a GameChat friend."

Talk to your kids

Since Switch 2 connects players online, Johnson emphasizes the importance of discussing the risks of cyberbullying with your children.

"Talk to your kids about recognizing when they feel angry or upset and how to manage intense emotions like anger. Make sure they understand that you expect them to behave and use respectful language online just as they would offline. Most importantly, let them know that if anything happens while they're playing games—or during any media experience—that makes them feel upset, they should come to you for help immediately," he explains.

Play with your kids

Gaming isn’t always a solo sport, says Jessica McLaughlin the founder of PlayWise, a media literacy resource that helps parents navigate kids' digital games and apps.

"There are so many great ways to connect and interact with each other while you play," she explains. "I always think back to those early pandemic days when my oldest was eight years old. Animal Crossing had just come out for the Switch—the timing couldn’t have been better! That game became such a great bonding activity for us. We planned and built our island together, exchanged fruit, and sold turnips with friends through video calls." She adds, "Nowadays, we still enjoy occasional Mario Kart competitions as a family!"

Family-friendly games on Switch 2

McLaughlin notes that, like the original Switch, the Switch 2 will offer a wide selection of family-friendly games. When considering video games for your family, she recommends thinking about how gaming fits into your daily routine and budget.

“As parents, if you aren’t gamers, it might feel like a big leap to become a gaming household,” she explains. “There are lots of affordable titles on the eShop, but not all are made for kids. Nintendo’s own games are premium quality, and they often go on sale. Their family subscription plan also offers good value.”

For parents looking for game suggestions, McLaughlin recommends starting with open and forgiving titles. “There are so many adorable, creative, and amazing games to get your kids started,” she says. “My oldest began playing Mario Kart at about three years old. The game was forgiving enough for him to just mash buttons and eventually learn how it worked. By age five or six, he was enjoying LEGO games, which let kids freely explore open worlds.”

She also suggests open-world and story-driven games like Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, and Super Mario Odyssey. “What I love about these games for younger kids is that they encourage interaction and exploration, helping kids develop problem-solving skills,” McLaughlin adds.

Buying the Nintendo Switch 2 is a significant decision for families, and Johnson stresses the importance of doing thorough research beforehand.

"A gaming console is an important investment for any family. Each console caters to different types of gamers," Johnson explains. "It's helpful to explore how many family-friendly games are available for it. Additionally, understanding the console's features for player interaction and how to manage communication with your kids is crucial."

Johnson also advises parents to pay close attention to the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) ratings for games. He notes, "Knowing the ESRB ratings for popular console games is essential to ensure that the games your child is interested in are suitable for their age."

If you're unsure about purchasing the Switch 2 right away, Johnson recommends waiting a bit and taking time to read reviews first.

"It might take a little while for new features, like the Switch 2's 'Connect' button, to show their full potential," he explains. "Waiting for reviewers, especially parents, to evaluate these features can be beneficial. Additionally, reviewing games can help you choose the best option for your family, as many consoles allow you to select which game comes bundled with the system."
