The wait is over. Tinker Bell returns for her first big adventure since 2012’s Secret of the Wings. Families can dive into The Pirate Fairy, available on Disney Blu-Ray/DVD on April 1, 2014.
Zarina, a smart and ambitious dust-keeper fairy, is captivated by Blue Pixie Dust and its endless possibilities. When Zarina’s wild ideas get her into trouble, she flees Pixie Hollow and joins forces with the scheming pirates of Skull Rock, who make her captain of their ship.
I originally got the chance to speak with Secret of the Wings director Peggy Holmes back in 2012, and I was really looking forward to sitting down with her again this past February to talk about the latest Tinker Bell adventure, The Pirate Fairy.
As Holmes explains, “the big, big, big idea of this movie is that we are taking Tinker Bell outside of Pixie Hollow and closer to her world.” Of course Holmes is speaking of the magical world of Neverland—with Peter Pan, Skull Rock, pirates and, of course, a very famous captain. “What makes this a huge adventure is the fairies are very far outside of Pixie Hollow,” explains Holmes.
Holmes knew that in this film she wanted to tell a story about a girl who makes a mistake and runs away. She talks about how the idea of a fairy on the run evolved into a premise that led to Skull Rock and pirates—and that from there, everything fell into place.
This opened the door to introduce both a young Captain Hook, known as a cabin boy named James, and a baby crocodile (who I guarantee will be a favourite in your household). Zarina is the heart of this story of redemption. Zarina, as a dust-keeper fairy, is often referred to as the “Tinker” of dust-keepers. We learn early on in the movie that she and Tinker Bell have a strong connection and even similar personalities.
