How to throw a jungle party

It won’t take much to turn your living room into a lush jungle that’s fit for little monkeys. Throw down faux tropical leaves (available at craft stores) and string up some bold garlands.

We cut triangles and thin rectangles from black card stock and then stuck them to baker’s twine.

Don't worry, we can't cut like Martha Stewart, either, so we made templates for the “roar,” monkey and jungle cat garland. For best results, print on card stock. Download the templates here.

Being kings and queens of the jungle is tough work. Invite those crazy cats to graze from a DIY snack bar. To make these treat cones, use the template from our PDF in the prevuous slide. Once you’ve cut out your shapes, spruce them up by adding black spots and lines with a black marker. Fasten into cones with tape, as per the template instructions and fill with the party animals’ favourite munchies. 

Let guests show their true spots by having them fashion their very own tails. You’ll need: scissors, baby tights, glue gun, faux fur, cotton batting, paintbrush, paint and ribbon.

1. Cut the legs off a pair of baby tights, leaving the feet intact. Fold one leg in half lengthwise and secure edges with hot glue. Let dry.

2. Cut out a small tuft of faux fur and affix to the end of tail. Stuff tail with cotton; glue top closed.

3. Have kids paint spots on their tail. Let dry.

4. Cut a length of ribbon that will be long enough to tie around child’s waist. Find the centre of the ribbon and fasten tail to centre using hot glue.

Let kids get into character with some spotted accessories. To make, you’ll need: plain black headbands, faux leaves (available at craft stores), glue gun, scissors, white stiffened felt, paintbrush and black paint. Glue faux leaves onto the centre of the headband. Cut two ear shapes from stiffened felt and paint black spots on one side of each. Pipe a line of hot glue onto the headband (slightly overlapping leaves), and gently place felt ears on. Hold until glue dries.

What’s a safari without binoculars? To make these fun specs, paint two toilet paper rolls white. Let dry before painting on some spots. Stick the tubes together with hot glue. Braid your desired length of baker’s twine (keep in mind, braiding will shorten the length) and knot at the ends. Glue ends onto tubes. Field glasses up!
