Pirates!: Band of Misfits on DVD (+ giveaway)

New on DVD this week is the entertaining and quirky tale about a group of crazy, yet lovable Pirates.

The premise: Set off the shores of London, back in the Victorian era, there is a yearly competition where swashbucklers compete for the title of "Pirate of the Year." This year, underdog Captain Pirate (voiced by Hugh Grant) and his crew of eccentric shipmates are determined to win and take on their rivals Cutlass Liz (voiced by Salma Hayek) and Black Bellamy (voiced by Jeremy Piven). And just when you think it’s all fun, games, pirate jokes and talking parrots, a pirate-hating Queen Victoria arrives on the scene causing trouble of her own.

What we loved: It's loaded with lots of squirrely British humour and a great soundtrack that will surely be appreciated by adult viewers, featuring songs like The Clash’s “London Calling” and Flight of the Conchord's “I’m Not Crying”. And keep an eye out for characters like Charles Darwin and a surprisingly curvaceous pirate who's not as "man-like" as the rest of the bunch.

Parental advisory: There wasn’t a ton of scary content, but some children may not understand the British accents and lingo. It’s definitely not your average children’s movie.

Canadian rating: PG (parental guidance suggested)
