The best family-friendly films of the year

Over the past year we've seen some great family-friendly films that entertained both kids and adults alike.

We've compiled a list of our 10 favourites... we hope you enjoyed them too!

Brave

Studio: Disney-Pixar
Featuring the voices of: Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly and Emma Thompson

Strong-willed Scottish princess, Merida, has a tongue as sharp as her archery skills are exact. With a tangle of the most beautiful red hair you'll ever see, Merida resists the attempts of her parents, King Fergus and Queen Elinor, to see her wed to a rival clansman to keep the peace. When the princess shirks her royal duties and sets off to enlist the help of a witch in a desperate attempt to change her fate. However, in doing so, Merida unwittingly unleashes a curse that could potentially tear her family — and the entire kingdom — apart.

Wreck-It Ralph

Wreck-It Ralph suffers from a serious case of jealousy. He wishes he were as beloved as his game’s good guy, Fix-It Felix. But, nobody loves a bad guy. When a modern, first-person shooter game arrives on the scene, Ralph sees it as his ticket to happiness and fame. He sneaks into the game but soon wrecks everything, accidently unleashing a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Will Wreck-It Ralph be able to save the day — or will it be game over?

Director Tim Burton returns to stop-motion animation with a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor turns to the power of science to bring his best buddy back to life — with some serious consequences.

Chimpanzee

Studio: Walt Disney
Narrated by: Tim Allen
Release date: Now available on DVD and Blu-ray

This Disney Nature documentary story follows the survival of three-year-old chimpanzee, Oscar, who gets separated from his mother during an attack by a rival chimp gang. While the film may leave you a little teary-eyed there are still plenty of entertaining and adorable moments that the kids will enjoy.

ParaNorman

Dr. Suess' The Lorax

Based on the popular Dr. Suess book and the original 1972 animated adventure, this latest adaptation focuses on a 12-year-old boy as he searches for a way to win the affections of his dream girl. When he meets the Lorax, the adorably grumpy creature who fights to protect his world, a series of adventures follows.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted

Studio: DreamWorks Animation
Featuring the voices of: Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith and Sacha Baron Cohen

Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Gloria the Hippo and her love-interest, Melman the Giraffe are all back in the third installment of this adventure franchise. This time the animals are trapped in Europe, where they catch the eye of the cunning Animal Control Spécialiste, Captain Chantel DuBois. Chaos ensues.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Based on the classic novel from J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first installment of Peter Jackson's latest Middle Earth trilogy. Set nearly 50 years before the events that take place in The Lord of the Rings,this latest adventure follows the trials and tribulations of Bilbo Baggins as he joins a band of merry dwarves on the hunt for the treasure they lost to the dragon, Smaug. It's the perfect fantasy adventure for the bigger kids in your house.
