Whoa! This mom got double the surprises in her twin delivery

What a difference just a few minutes makes.

When Maria Esperanza Flores Rios went into labor on New Year's Eve at Delano Regional Medical Center in California, she probably assumed that her twins would at least share the same birthday, but this boy-girl duo had other ideas.

Look at these beautiful babies! This set of twins was born in Delano last night. Big brother was born in 2017. Little sister was born in 2018! Congrats to the parents!

Little Joaquin got in just under the wire in 2017, entering the world at 11:58 p.m., but his little sister, Aitana de Jesus Ontiveros, made her debut on the other side of the calendar divide, at 12:16 a.m. in 2018. Not only that, but mom delivered her little girl via C-section—thanks to her slight breech position—while Joaquin arrived via vaginal birth.

None of this was forecasted, obviously—the twins weren't even due for another 27 days and Maria had scheduled a C-section for January 10th.

With birthdays straddling the 31st/1st, we must say that complicates their taxes for next year, but it definitely will add some intrigue to their annual birthday shindig—when to hold it? And they'll have to explain to people for their whole lives that YES, we're twins, but NO, we don't share a birthday!

As notable birth stories and interesting birthdays go, this one certainly takes the (birthday) cake!
