Oscars 2014: Moms who rocked the red carpet

Angelina Jolie surprised us all last night with this sparkly number because a) it's not black, and b) sparkles! She looked absolutely exquisite in this Elie Saab dress with the Ferragama shoes and clutch, Robert Procop jewels. Her best accessory, Braaad (Brad Pitt), looked handsomer than ever at 50, in a Tom Ford tux—perfect for his big win for 12 Years a Slave. 

Hollywood royalty, indeed, Brad and Ang showed up just before the Oscar curtains opened. And they did not disappoint, did they?

As my mom—who will be showing up sporadically throughout this gallery—put it, "Brad looked smashingly debonair, and Ang so demure!"

Pregnant Olivia Wilde was utter perfection on the red carpet—love the comfy pocket and white detail in the back. When E! host Ryan Seacrest asked Olivia about the dress, she replied, "We...," in reference to the baby, of course. "We're both wearing Valentino and Lorraine Schwartz jewels." Love!

Olivia's due May 4. As Ryan pointed out, she and fiancé Jason Sudeikis like to say "May the fourth be with you" to remember their due date.

Amy Adams's dress attracted some buzz because the Best Actress nominee insisted on dressing and styling herself for the award show. Wonder if her daughter, three-and-a-half-year-old Aviana, had a hand in it? "I felt like I was one with the dress," Amy said of her classic blue Gucci Premiere couture gown, Christian Louboutin shoes and Tiffany jewellery and clutch. Not bad at all for a self-style!

"The dress is beautiful with her colouring," my mom says. "I love the cut, and she's not constantly pulling it up." True that, Mom.

"Kerry Washington was lovely in orchid," says my mom. "So classic and classy." 

Indeed, the custom Jason Wu maternity gown (and his "first-ever Oscar gown") was perfect on the pregnant Scandal star. So perfect, she needed few accessories...beyond her bump! And that deep red lipstick added the perfect pop of colour. Glowing!

The embodiment of elegance and poise, Best Actress–winner Cate Blanchett embraced the "nude" trend in this amazing Giorgio Armani Prive dress, dotted with Swarovski crystals. 

We loved how Cate acknowledged her three boys in her acceptance speech. "Thank you to my three glorious sons," she said. "I would not be standing here without you." Melt!

Frozen's Idina Menzel looked every bit a princess in this custom Vera Wang dress and exquisite Chimento statement necklace—and she sung our favourite song Let It Go so amazingly. Chills!

On the red carpet, Idina talked to Ryan Seacrest about her four-year-old son, Walker's response to Frozen.  "He's seen it several times," she said. "I have to teach him what the character is and Mommy, and how it's separate. One day I practised it somewhere, and I forgot the words and I came home and I said, 'Walker, Mommy forgot the words to "Let it go,"' and he said, 'did you say "let it snow, let it snow"?' and I was, like, 'you have no faith in me!'" Awww, so cute.

Charlize Theron wowed everyone, as expected, in this exquisite black Christian Dior haute-couture gown with invisible straps, Harry Winston jewels and Christian Louboutin shoes.

"Breathtaking Charlize," says my mom. "So beautiful."

Best Actress–nominee Sandra Bullock may not have won for her riveting performance in Gravity, but she was one of the night's biggest fashion winners in this fabulous deep blue Alexander McQueen gown and Lorraine Schwartz jewellery.

Looks like my mom agrees... "So elegant in the midnight blue McQueen," she says.

Frozen's Kristen Bell looked so pretty in this frosty-white Roberto Cavalli dress. On the red carpet, she said she chose it because it had a "Frozen vibe." Hubby Dax looked pretty dapper himself—love them!

"When you see me on the red carpet of the Oscars tonight," Kristen tweeted (along with a close-up of her clutch), "just know…there’s a burrito in my clutch." Ha! And it's a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch.

Pregnant-with-twins Elsa Pataky sparkled in this teal Elie Saab gown and Graziela Gems earrings. Her hottest accessory, hubby Chris Hemsworth, donned a David August Tux. Thorrrrr!

Viola Davis glowed in her "go-to colour" green. The classic strapless Escada dress stood out on the red carpet and looked glam and gorj as she presented on the Oscar stage.  

Looks like my mom agreed: "Viola looked most elegant in jade satin." I couldn't have put it better.

Gotta love the way Julia Roberts wears what she wants. And that's not a fancy way of saying this dress should stay on all those worst-dressed lists that have been circulating today; I love its uniqueness. This black and lace Givenchy is classic Julia. For that, it rocks.

Easily one of the best-dressed of the night, Kate Hudson worked this amazing beaded white Atelier Versace gown.

"She looks beautiful," says my mom, "but I guess I'm not a fan of the perilously plunging neckline."

Jennifer Garner shimmered in this stunning, silver beaded Oscar de la Renta dress. She's honestly never looked better on the red carpet—flawless.

"She looks natural and beautiful," says my mom, "but I'm not a fan of the flapper style." Hmmm, I think the flapper look works for Jen—playful and youthful. What do you think?

This simple, white beaded Calvin Klein dress was perfection, "edged" up with the sleek hairdo and spider-web Bulgari necklace. Her best accessory, Liev Schreiber, was MIA, alas. He was home with their two kids, Naomi explained, because he had an early call time the next morning.
