UPDATE: Jaden says he's staying put and doesn't want emancipation.

Jaden Smith wants to be independent of his parents?! That's what his dad, Will Smith, 44, told the UK's The Sun newspaper.

Apparently, Jaden has asked for this gift of freedom for his fifteenth birthday, July 8.

"[Jaden] says, 'Dad, I want to be emancipated,'" Will told The Sun. "I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place, like ooh."

"If kids just want to have command of their lives, I understand," said Will, who was raised by very strict military father.

“We generally don’t believe in punishment," he goes on to say, reiterating his now-famous no-punishment policy. "From the time Jaden was five or six we would sit him down, and all he has to do is be able to explain why what he did was the right thing for his life."

I don't think this grand emancipation request is an indication that Jaden wants out of his family; they seem like one of the tightest families in Hollywood. Jaden and his dad even work together quite a bit — they're co-starring in the hot new flick After Earth. No, it seems more like either something to do with Scientology or just a very very very wealthy celebrity kid's desire for his very own mansion.

I guess we'll see what happens.
