Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher: Split

Wow. Well, I guess we all saw this coming. Demi's been whittling down to nothing, and Ashton's been acting erratically on Twitter and allegedly having an affair....

After 6 years of marriage, the famous couple is calling it quits. Demi (49) informed the Associated Press earlier today (Thursday), releasing the following statement:

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton. As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give anyone going through a similar situation.

It's a pretty condemning statement.... If I were Ashton, I wouldn't like it very much. But Ashton (33) responded like a mensch when he, not surprisingly, took to Twitter:

I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and light, AK

Like most splits, this is sad. Demi and Ashton achieved a lot together during their marriage with the DNA Foundation (the Demi and Ashton Foundation), which they launched in 2010 to fight child sex slavery around the world. Ashton has also played an integral part in raising Demi's children with ex-husband Bruce Willis -- Rumer (23), Scout (20) and Tallulah Belle (17).

Demi and Ashton took the world by surprise when they started dating in 2003, and they got married in 2006. This was the first marriage for Ashton, the third for Demi (before Bruce, she was married to rocker Freddy Moore).

You can catch Ashton on the TV sitcom Two and a Half Men (anyone watching that?) and on the much-buzzed about movie New Years Eve. Demi's most recent films include Margin Call and Another Happy Day.
