Imagine taking your healthy baby boy home only to end up back in the hospital weeks later, giving birth to twins. Arifa Sultana had it happen thanks to her double uterus.

In the first month after giving birth to a baby, most moms are pretty focussed on healing and getting to know their beautiful new family member. Twenty-year-old Arifa Sultana was doing just that when she got the shock of her life: She went into labour—again!—just 26 days after welcoming her healthy baby boy. Yep, you read that right.
Home with her newborn son, Arifa, who lives in a rural area of Bangladesh, was experiencing severe abdominal pains so she returned to the hospital, only to learn that those pains were actually contractions. After an ultrasound doctors realized that she was still pregnant—with twins, in fact!—and performed an emergency C-section.
"We were very shocked and surprised. I have never observed something like this before," said Sheila Poddar, Arifa's gynaecologist. "All three children are safe and healthy," she added, assuring that the new mother of three is also doing well.
Arifa has a condition called uterus didelphys, which essentially means she has two wombs. It occurs when the two small tubes that normally join together to form one uterus don't fuse properly, and could have been detected during prenatal care. However, Arifa's husband, Sumon Biswas, told the BBC that they could not afford an ultrasound during her pregnancy.
After four days in the hospital, Arifa and her twin babies were discharged with no complications. "It was a miracle from Allah that all my children are healthy," Sumon said. "I will try my best to keep them happy."
So, to recap: Two uteruses and three babies in 26 days. Keep that in mind next time you think you've had a busy month!
