George Clooney's mom confirms he's engaged

Did you ever think it was going to happen? I did. And everyone's going bonkers: In case you haven't heard, George Clooney, 52, is engaged to human rights attorney Amal Alamuddin, 36—who's famous for representing Wikileaks' founder Julian Assange and acting as adviser to Kofi Annan.

And in case you couldn't believe it, George's 74-year-old mom, Nina Clooney, has confirmed it!

"We weren’t at all surprised when they told us they were engaged," Nina tells MailOnline from her and hubby Nick Clooney's home in Augusta, Kentucky, "and we couldn’t be happier for them."

"You can say I'm extremely happy," she beams. "Amal's a lovely girl." And she goes on to describe her future daughter-in-law as having both "brains and beauty."

Nina also shared that her Oscar-winning son first introduced Amal to her and Nick around a year ago, and the four of them recently went as a foursome to the exclusive White House screening—in the company of President Obama himself—of George's movie The Monuments Men.

"They share a sense of fun, a sense of humour," Nina says of George and Amal, "and they are both very caring people."

"On an intellectual level, they are equals," she continues. "That is very important to him. Amal’s world couldn’t be more different from the Hollywood lifestyle."

When MailOnline asked her if Amal was at all like George's former girlfriends, Nina replied, "Heavens, no! She’s a lawyer, she is brilliant, she is a very bright woman and at the very top of her career."

Nick Clooney also confirmed his son's engagement over at TMZ (funny article there with more engagement deets!).
