Three weeks ago, Drew Barrymore, 41, took her daughters, Olive, 5, and Frankie, 2, to the Most Magical Place on Earth in Orlando, Florida. In a recent Late Night With Seth Meyers interview, the Santa Clarita Diet actress shared some photos of her experience at both Disney World and Disney Land with her kids.
The mom of two says that Frankie always asks to go back to Disney World, and that both kids “are so crazy about it—it was the best experience ever. I just had tears of joy seeing their joy.”
However, every parent knows too well that a full-day outing with zero nap time can only lead to trouble. Barrymore shared hilarious photos with Myers of the moment her daughter, Olive, dropped down and threw a very-public tantrum in her fancy red princess dress.
“That is a legitimate picture of my daughter just losing it on the floor,” the actress said. “In this case, she wanted to chase a duck or an egret—it was Florida, so some interesting bird…. Olive was determined to catch it.” Barrymore wouldn’t let her run after it, hence the meltdown. After the freak out, Barrymore realized that she had learned her lesson for next time: “I say just let ’em chase it and see what happens.”
And that wasn’t the only time her daughter completely went off with onlookers nearby. She shared another photo of Olive refusing to get off the ground at Disneyland in California, with yet another hilarious “you’ve got to be kidding me” reaction.
“This is her losing it at Disneyland—because it all ends up there,” said Barrymore. “You push it enough, because you’re like, ‘I’m here! Let’s skip the nap! Let’s go, go, go!’ You want to maximize it. This is how it always ends for me.” We feel your pain, Drew—we’ve all been there!
In giving Seth (who has a 10-month-old son, Ashe) some parent-to-parent advice on meltdowns, she advised that “you cannot predict [them]. I think you should have 10 consistent tools in your arsenal. It’s either the tender, loving approach or the ‘I’m very serious’ approach,” to which Seth responded, “I like your approach, which is, ‘A photo op.'”
We love Barrymore’s “you gotta laugh or you’ll cry” attitude. That said, Drew, you might want to try one of our 10 tantrum tamers that actually work next time one of the girls throws a fit.
