Jun 01, 2017Level of difficulty: Easy peasy Age range: 3+ This craft is definitely better with permanent markers, so pull out a smock or old clothes. If you only have washable markers, don't skip the sealing step. Safety first: If marker comes into contact with skin, wash immediately—a paste with two parts baking soda and one part coconut oil does a pretty good job. Use markers in a well-ventilated room. The takeaway: This craft is super satisfying to make and is a very useful gift to give. Plus, kids won't even realize they're practising their lettering!
You'll need: 1 cork tile (find them at a dollar store or office supply store; they usually come 12-in x 12-in) Permanent markers Painters' tape Craft sealer (like Mod Podge)
Step 1 Map out a rough grid on the cork tile with strips of painters' tape. This will ensure your letters are evenly spaced and eliminates the need for a ruler.
Step 2 Outline your letters with a dark coloured marker. You can choose any style of lettering, but rounded letters are easy and very forgiving.
Step 3 Colour in your letters and add doodles to your design.
Step 4 The marker really soaks into the cork, but adding a thin coat of sealer will ensure the colours stay bright and don't rub off. If your mouse pad has any rough bits, give it a gentle sanding. That's it! Dad's productivity will go up at least 10 percent.
