Taking care of a baby doesn’t require technology or gadgets. But if you’re an early-adopter type when it comes to tech and gadgets, you’ll definitely want to know about the Project Nursery Smart Baby Monitor System, which launched this week at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas.
The system pairs an HD camera (or multiple cameras, if you prefer) with an app to let you keep a close eye on your little one from the convenience of your smartphone. The app has cool features such as pan, tilt, zoom, night vision and the ability to talk to your baby. It even lets you record video or take pictures of your baby, which will save directly to your phone or tablet. And you can opt in for push notifications to alert you to when your baby makes a sound or moves around.
But here’s where the system gets extra cool—and very 2018. The Smart Baby Monitor System is the first-ever baby monitor designed to work with Alexa, the voice-controlled intelligent personal assistant by Amazon. It comes with a separate Alexa speaker, intended to be kept in the kitchen, living room or master bedroom, and it means you’ll be able to give hands-free voice commands such as, “Alexa, start nap timer” or “Alexa, record a video.” There are currently more than 10,000 general Alexa skills you can use (including one from Today’s Parent!), and Project Nursery says there are around 70 made specifically for watching over your baby.
The system was developed thanks to a partnership between baby electronics brand Project Nursery and consumer electronics company VOXX Accessories. The Smart Baby Monitor System will be available in February for US$229.
