Barbie and Mattel have been killin' the representation game recently with their Sheroes line of dolls, but now she's come out in support of marriage equality and we're all about it.
The official Barbie Style Instagram recently posted a photo series of Barbie hanging out with a doll version of Aimee Song, a popular fashion blogger from L.A. In the photos, Barbie and Song wear doll-sized versions of Song's "Love Wins" shirt, which Song created in support of the LGBTQ community last summer.
"Proud to wear this 'Love Wins' shirt with @songofstyle!" reads the caption on Barbie's post. The human-sized shirts are available on the Two Songs website, which is a collection Song started with her sister Dani. Half of the proceeds from the shirt go directly to The Trevor Project, which provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention support for LGBTQ youth.
Song explains on her blog that she created the shirt in honour of her friends who identify as LGBTQ. Like Barbie, she identifies as an ally, but that didn't stop her from reposting the photos of her and Barbie with the coy caption: "Me and @BarbieStyle supporting equal rights because #LOVEWINS. Or as some of you have speculated, maybe we’re secretly dating." (Let's be real, most kids' Barbies have been kissing other Barbie dolls for a long time. Growing up, Ken dolls were scarce. Plus, you can't spell Barbie without bi.)
It's awesome to see Barbie champion a good cause, especially when that cause supports youth who may have been ostracized for playing with dolls like Barbie. Kids have long held up Barbie's life as the ideal, so it's really significant to see this ideal filled out with more diverse faces. Hopefully, more work like this will make her life in plastic that much more fantastic.
