Homework battles

Q: How can I motivate my seven-year-old to do his homework? It is a constant struggle and it is making our evenings and weekends miserable.

A: The first thing you want to do is meet with his teacher to find out just how long it should take him to complete his homework. This will demonstrate to the teacher and your child that you plan on being involved. Also, sit down with your son and develop a plan. When and where does he want to do homework? While many children need a separate space, such as a desk in their bedroom, some work best at the dining room table with the evening activity going on around them.

Your job is to help him develop a plan and be available as a consultant. His is to do the work. If he’s involved in setting the rules, he’s more likely to follow them.
