An increasing number of women are adding massage therapists to their circle of caregivers throughout pregnancy and birth.

"Massage therapy in pregnancy offers multiple benefits," says Cindy McNeely, a registered massage therapist. She notes that pregnant women find massage helpful in reducing the discomfort associated with the physical changes of pregnancy, as well as helping them prepare for the birth.

Some therapists will also provide support throughout labour, delivery and the postpartum period. Having a well-acquainted massage therapist in the labour room has advantages, says McNeely. "A familiar therapist will be able to anticipate the specific needs and preferences of the mother, ranging from the desired pressure to the oils or music a client is partial to. A massage therapist can help a labouring woman stay comfortable and focused on the job at hand," says McNeely.

To find a massage therapist that specializes in perinatal care, call your provincial massage therapy association and ask for a referral to a therapist with specific pregnancy-related training. McNeely suggests interviewing the practitioner by phone to insure they have the expertise you are seeking.

McNeely is co-founder of Trimesters Massage Therapy Education in Toronto which provides training in massage therapy for pegnant women to students and professional therapists.

For information on Trimesters programs, call: (416) 422-2778 or e-mail cmcneely@istar.ca.
