Your baby
• How big is your baby now? He weighs about 1.25 kg (2.7 lbs) and, from head to toe, he's about 42 cm (16.7 in) long. But keep in mind that these are average weights and lengths and that individual babies vary greatly in size.
• Your baby has plenty more growing to do. Over the next couple of weeks, he'll go through a growth spurt.
• At birth, the average North American full-term baby weighs about 3.28 to 3.4 kg (7 - 7.5 lbs) and measures about 50.8 cm (20 in) long from head to toe. Babies born just a few weeks early may weigh considerably less, because they have less time to grow in utero. (Birth weights less than 2.5 kg or 5.5 lbs are considered low.)

Your bump
How are you feeling? Positively pregnant? You should be. Your uterus has grown about 4 cm (1.5 in) in the last four weeks. It's probably about 7.6 to 10.2 cm (3 - 4 in) above your bellybutton, and you've likely gained somewhere between 19 and 25 pounds.

Ready to shop?
Maybe you’ve already started! To find out what you need for your new arrival, talk to friends and co-workers who have had kids and ask them about their must-have baby gear and what they could’ve done without.

Good Question! We’d like to save money by getting our baby gear second-hand. Are there any safety issues we should know about?
Absolutely. Car seats, and some other baby gear, have expiry dates and it’s also important to check if an item has been recalled. If you’re taking things off a friend’s hands, or buying at garage sales or websites, consult second-hand savvy before you say yes.

Labour day tips: what kind of birth?
Sure, most babies are born in a hospital, on a delivery table, with pain medication. But maybe you’d like something a little different? Today’s moms — a few of them, anyway — are exploring:
• water birth
• hypnobirthing
• home birth
• acupuncture for labour

Looking ahead
Researchers have learned that sleep, not sex, may be the cement that keeps couples together after their first baby arrives. A study found the amount of shut-eye new parents managed to nab strongly predicted how satisfied they were with their relationship. Maybe now is a good time to start planning how you can sneak in some extra zzzz’s — like swapping off mornings or taking turns going to bed early.
