The Power of Play

I'm amazed to watch my 15-month-old daughter, Anna, at play these days. As she grows, the same old toys suddenly have new play value. Her plush chair is hoisted over her head and she giggles as they both fall to the ground. Her favourite doll is given the front seat of the ride-on car and Anna pushes her around the living room. Anna has finally learned how to squeeze her tub toys so the water squirts out—and does so aimed right at mom. Very funny.

One of the most interesting developments is Anna's new ability to (occasionally) play on her own. I wonder what's going through her mind as she joyfully frolics in her crib in the morning with just a teddy bear for entertainment. But that is the magic of childhood—to be able to make fun out of nothing at all.

Read more about how our kids learn through play, and kick-start the fun with ideas from our Game Centre.

Until next time,

Hot Tips to Keep You Cool - From firefighter Shane Ferguson:

When you’re ready to start your barbecue, make sue you’re at least five, or, better yet, 10 feet away from your house, trees or anything else that could catch fire. From the time you light it until the time your barbecue is shut off and completely cooled down, it’s your responsibility. Burns, fires and accidents happen when you leave a barbecue unattended.
