O Christmas Tree

By Natalie Fraser for Kathy Bergen

I remember well the last year my family bought a real Christmas tree. The bitter cold at the tree farm chilled us to the bone. I picked out a large fir and it didn't fit in the car, prompting a withering I-told-you-so look from my husband. Once we got it home, my son Dan, then 12, announced that he had done enough and didn't want to help decorate it.

But the worst was yet to come. Although the tree stood upright in its stand, it leaned a bit because of a bend in the trunk. As we began decorating, it suddenly started to shake, then rock. We watched aghast as it fell to the floor with an enormous crash. Standing amid crushed ornaments and broken branches, with water from the tree stand seeping everywhere, I suddenly knew what Santa would bring our family that year - an artificial tree!

The following Christmas, my husband brought the new tree up from the basement and quickly snapped it together. Everyone helped decorate it quite cheerfully. Afterwards, we ate shortbread cookies and drank hot chocolate while basking in the soft glow of the Christmas tree lights. Works for me!

Hot Tips to Keep You Cool - From firefighter Shane Ferguson:

Unless they are blowing them out on a birthday cake, candles aren't for kids. Never leave a child alone in a room with lit candles, and don't even think about lighting one in her or his bedroom. Keep lit candles up high and out of reach, period.
