A Tofurkey Tradition

By Natalie Fraser for Kathy Bergen

I always enjoy celebrating Thanksgiving dinner with my whole family in attendance. Last year, I prepared a traditional Thanksgiving meal for everyone with potatoes, stuffing, gravy, carrots, cranberry sauce - and a "tofurkey" as the pièce de resistance. The tofurkey, a tofu-based turkey substitute, cooked up easily and once sliced, looked quite a bit like the real thing.

The tofurkey scored big points with the vegetarian contingent of our family. They gobbled it up, happily asking for seconds! But the other relatives looked glum. I suspect that they secretly felt they were being asked to gnaw on cardboard...

Celebrate the season with some new Thanksgiving traditions this year! Take a family hike—we've got some great ideas to make it special. Decorate your home with our fantastic fall crafts. And of course, check out our delicious Thanksgiving recipes, with everything from pumpkin mousse pie to maple-glazed sweet potatoes and apples.

Until next time,

For me, Fall is a time for organizing budgets and financial goal setting. I recently came across an idea posted in the Family Finance forum which caught my eye. Gina5 posted a question asking about saving strategies for kids, and 1st time Calgarian suggested an in-trust trading account as being a great way to teach children about stocks, investing and saving.

If debating is your thing, then the News and Views forum will not disappoint! While this forum is not for the "faint of heart" it does offer topics ranging from thought provoking discussions about current events to gossip and news on current personalities. I was riveted to the discussions recently happening in this forum about the death of Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan.

Hot Tips to Keep You Cool - From firefighter Shane Ferguson:

Matches or a lighter in a child’s hands can kill. Don’t leave them lying around the house, where a child can pick them up and play with them. As well, remind your children that if they ever find matches or lighters, they should give them to a grownup.
