Decorative Foil Jars

Pretty jars made out of candy foil

user rating :

Ages:
Four and up (an adult may have to help with cutting)

You’ll need:
• frozen juice carton or clean dry glass jar (you don’t have to remove the label)
• foil wrappers (Recommended: inner wrappers from Caramilk, Aero or Hershey bars or kisses; Quality Street chocolates; Kinder Surprise — the unprinted side. Cello- or plastic-backed foil doesn’t stick well.)
• bit of ribbon or raffia (optional)
• craft glue or tacky glue and brush with plastic bristles (or glue in a plate for little ones)
• washcloth for sticky fingers

1. Yes, someone will have to eat the candy first. Oh dear.

2. If you’re using a bar wrapper, cut it into pieces — any shape (the kisses wrappers are fine just as they come). Smooth them very flat with your finger. You can use one or two colours — or go for a metallic mixture of all the colours you can find.

3. Brush glue onto a section of the jar or carton and stick on a piece of foil. Cover the whole container (you don’t have to do it in one go — you can do a few pieces, let it dry and then continue). Don’t have enough wrappers? Fill in spaces with pieces of kitchen foil or tissue paper. (If your child is very little, she can dip each piece of foil into glue and stick it onto the jar. A grown-up can help smooth the edges with a little brush.)

4. When you’ve finished, check that all the edges are glued down — do any spot repairs.

5. Let the jar dry in a warm spot (like on top of the fridge).

6. If you like, tie a little ribbon around the neck of the container to finish it neatly. Fill with your favourite pencils and markers or a few dried flowers. Or (this is hard) give it away — makes a pretty present.
