Halloween Hangup windsock

Let it all hang out! This not-so-scary jack-o'-lantern windsock is a breeze to make.

Jean Scobie Parker

Halloween windsock instructions Hung from a tree branch or from the porch, it’ll wave in the wind, greeting passersby with a Halloween smile. Have an older child or an adult help with stapling and cutting. Ages 4+.
Halloween windsock instructions

You’ll need:
• large orange garden garbage bag
• piece of thin cardboard 36.5 x 18 cm (14 ½ x 7 in.)
• stapler
• black permanent broad-tip maker
• clothespins
• hole punch
• string

Halloween windsock instructions 1. Cut the garden bag in half vertically. Insert the strip of cardboard into the bottom of one of the halves (save the other half bag for another windsock), with the long edge parallel to the bottom seam of the bag. To hold the cardboard in place, staple once through the plastic and cardboard close to the cut edge of the bag.
Halloween windsock instructions 2. Fold the enclosed cardboard section down once and staple again to the edges.
Halloween windsock instructions 3. Loosely roll up the open end of the bag – a 5 cm (2 in.) wide roll is best – to within 2.5 cm (1 in.) of the enclosed cardboard and secure with clothespins so it doesn’t unroll. Have an adult cut through the rolled-up bag at 4 cm (1 ½ in.) intervals. Remove the clothespins and let the child unroll the streamers.
Halloween windsock instructions 4. With a black marker draw and colour in jack-o’-lantern features in the middle of the cardboard section. The features could also be cut from black adhesive vinyl or paper and glued in place.
Halloween windsock instructions 5. Bend the cardboard into a cylinder, overlap the edges, then staple securely. (You may want to reinforce this seam with clear packing tape.)
Halloween windsock instructions 6. Punch four equally spaced holes around the top rim of the windsock. Thread a 1 m (3 ft.) piece of string in and out the holes and knot the ends together. Pull up the two outer loops and use these to hang the windsock.
