Would you consider staying silent for an entire day to send a message that the plight millions of mothers dying preventable deaths during childbirth would be recognized? Because that's what a new campaign from Every Mother Counts, a charity helmed by Christy Turlington Burns, wants us to do.
In the heyday of the supermodel, Christy Turlington was queen. As a teenage fashion junkie, my walls were plastered with black & white photos of her Calvin Klein ads, carefully exacto-knifed out of my parents' fancier magazines. Her flawless skin and impossibly tiny nose were a fantasy for the acne-prone, big Armenian-schnozed, 16-year-old me.
In the ads, she portrayed the mom of gloriously angelic, white-clad children, playing on a beach. Now, as a recognized face, the wife of actor/director Edward Burns and mother of two, Christy Turlington Burns leads a charity called Every Mother Counts. After becoming CARE international's spokesperson for maternal care in 2005, Christy went back to school for a Masters in Public Health. Upon learning about maternal mortality rates, and that 90% of those tragic deaths are preventable, she started her charity which has taken off in the social media space and gained attention through her outreach with North American mothers and mom bloggers.
This new video, chock-a-block with mothers famous and not-so-famous, is meant to shock us all into silence. I'm not actually sure how I feel about it. Take a look. What do you think? (Personally, I think my kids would be making me nuts all day asking why Mom isn't speaking.)
