Apple wreath for the childcare provider

6 and up

What you'll need:

10-12 apples
Lemon juice
Cinnamon, nutmeg, all spice, ground cloves
Wire coat hanger or floral wire
Cookie sheet
Ribbon and raffia

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 175°F.
2. Slice apples into thin disc-shaped slices or 2” chunks.
3. Soak apples in lemon juice for 10 minutes.
4. Coat apples with spice mixture.
5. Lay apple pieces on a cookie sheet in one layer.
6. Bake apples for 4-5 hours until dried. Flip at two-hour mark.
7. Set to cool.
8. Untwist a coat hanger to straight or cut a 12” piece of floral wire.
9. Slide apple pieces onto the wire, leaving 3” on each end.
10. Shape loaded wire into a shape – heart, oval, circle, square – then twist ends together to secure and leave space for a bow.
11. Tie a bow with raffia and ribbon and attach to the wreath.

In #4, could you change the '3-4"pieces' to '3 or 4" pieces', please? To a 9 year-old, it looked like 'three-quarter inch pieces'. Does anyone know of a craft that uses about 30 very small pieces of a zipper? The piece that's turned under the headband at each end will certainly catch in the hair so we'll trim it off or do the project using ribbon.

Hi Michelle, thanks for your comment. That is a good question. This image is a stock photo. The christmas tree and snowman are not part of the craft roundup. On second thought, I perhaps should have chosen an image of one of the crafts featured. The good news is that I believe the craft featured in the photo is simply modelling clay or Play-doh formed into a Christmas tree and snowman. Thanks again for getting in touch. I truly appreciate your feedback. Alex, editor of Todaysparent.com

It LOOKS great, but won't the wearer's hair get tangled and caught in the zipper?
